Raven's Brew Coffee, the official coffee sponsor of the 2010 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, the "Iditarod of Harley-Davidson™"
It all started at a rest stop.
Two men in leathers noticed a dirt bike in the back of a truck. They climbed off their Harley Davidson motorcycles and ambled over to the young couple. They motioned toward the bike and handed them a piece of paper, having no idea they had given it to Raven's Brew Coffee's Marketing Coordinator. And no idea the moment she looked down upon the flier in her hands that the fate of Raven's Brew was sealed.
The flier details a motorcycle challenge of epic proportions. The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge will start on June 20th, 2010. Up to one-thousand riders will depart from Key West, FL and spend the next 14 days on the ride of their lives, ending on July 4th in Homer, AK; having crossed 7,000+ grueling miles.
Their journey will take them across 62 Mountain Ranges, 33 Indian Reservations, 25 National Forests, 8 Deserts, 6 National Parks, 4 Swamps, and 2 Countries all with the words, "Hoka Hey, It's a Good Day to Ride" ringing in their minds. More...
Some will be there in an attempt to win the elusive $500,000 prize for the first place finish. Others will partake in the Challenge to remember fallen friends and family. Some will journey on a personal trail of self discovery, and some because the thrill of the open road would be too much to pass up. Others will ride to raise awareness and funds for the charitable organizations to which the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge is committed to donating.
In any case, Raven's Brew Coffee will be there. At two check points along the winding and dusty road, Raven's Brew will be there to provide weary bikers with the high-speed blend they need to continue on. At the finish line Raven's Brew will be standing tall with open arms as if to say, "You did it. Now, drink something wonderful." And at the final event in Homer on July 4th it will be impossible to miss the white tents proudly displaying the Hoka Hey Logo, side by side, with the Deadman's Reach® logo, drawing in elated riders and their friends and family as they treat themselves to coffee, merchandise and a friendly handshake.
Join Raven's Brew Coffee at the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge from June 20th to July 4th. Enter as a rider, sponsor a Veteran rider, or to join the 4th of July Celebration Party in Homer.
Either way, the Deadman's skeleton would love to see you there for the ride of your life.

for the 2010 Heather Lende book tour
Anyone who has written both the obituaries and the social column for her local newspaper knows a thing or two about life and death; anyone who filed these stories in a remote Alaskan town is intimately acquainted with the precariousness of our journey here on Earth. In her bestselling first book, If You Lived Here, I’d Know Your Name, Heather Lende invited us into breathtakingly beautiful Haines. She introduced us to her husband and five children and the remarkable inhabitants of this tiny spit of land where the fjords meet the mountains and the rivers meet the ocean, where there’s no traffic light but plenty of bears and moose. More...
Since then, a near-fatal bicycle collision with a truck has given Lende a few more reasons to consider matters both spiritual and temporal. Like so much of life in Haines, Lende’s recovery was a community effort. Family and friends cooked her meals, revamped her house, and got her back on her feet. Hers was a singular event, but the truth is, by the time we reach a certain age, most of us have been hit by a truck in one way or another. Lende shows us that our responses to those setbacks have everything to do with faith. Whether she is belting out the soundtrack from The Sound of Music while snowshoeing on a deserted mountain (her idea of praying); struggling with how to love her neighbors when their dog has been killing her cherished chickens; or weeping with joy as she walks down to the beach to witness her daughter’s marriage, Lende’s plainspoken conviction is inspiring. Like her own mother’s last wish—“Take good care of the garden and the dogs”—Lende’s writing, so honest and unadorned, offers profound life lessons.
